How to Get the Most Out of Your Matchmaking Investment

You have done your research, vetted your options, and hired a professional matchmaker. Now the real work begins — because the quality of your matchmaking experience is not solely determined by the matchmaker. It is a partnership, and the clients who get the best results are the ones who show up as active, engaged, and coachable participants.

I asked matchmakers across the country: "What do your most successful clients do differently?" Their answers were strikingly consistent.

1. Be Radically Honest from Day One

"My best clients tell me everything during intake," said Angela Torres. "Their insecurities, their deal-breakers, their embarrassing habits. One client told me in our first meeting that she picks her teeth at the dinner table. That is not the kind of thing you want me to find out from her date's feedback."

2. Respond to Your Matchmaker Quickly

"My most successful clients treat matchmaking communication like work communication," said Robert Cheng. "They respond promptly, thoughtfully, and with the respect they would give a professional colleague."

3. Give Detailed Feedback After Every Date

"Had a nice time" is useless feedback. After each date, provide what you liked, what you did not connect with, whether you felt physical attraction, how the conversation flowed, and whether you would like to see them again.

"The feedback loop is how I calibrate," Cheng said. "Each date teaches me something about what you actually respond to versus what you say you want."

4. Trust the Process (and the Matchmaker)

> "You hired an expert. Let them be one. You do not tell your dentist how to hold the drill." — Robert Cheng

5. Stay Open to Surprise

"My single biggest success story involved a client who wanted to reject a match based on her photo," Torres recalled. "I talked her into one date. They have been married for seven years."

6. Do Not Date Outside the Service Simultaneously

"You cannot fully commit to the matchmaking process if you are also swiping on Hinge every night," said Carroll. "The two approaches require different mindsets."

7. Invest in Yourself

Use the matchmaking period for personal development. Update your wardrobe, start a modest exercise routine, read a book about attachment styles, practice conversation skills.

8. Be Patient

Matchmaking typically takes 6 to 18 months. "Do not judge the service based on the first two matches," Torres said. "Judge it based on whether the fifth match is better than the first."

The ROI Mindset

Think of your matchmaking investment the way you would think of any significant professional engagement. You are paying for a process, not a guarantee. Your matchmaker provides expertise, database access, and objective judgment. You provide honesty, responsiveness, openness, and patience.

"I have facilitated over 400 marriages," Torres said. "In almost every case, the client who found their partner was the client who showed up fully — not the client who paid the most, or who had the best profile, or who was the most attractive. The one who showed up fully."
